Black “Arrogance” as Defiance

Yesterday the Denver Broncos out-defended (because the game was all about the defense) the Carolina Panthers bringing an end to football season and giving white supremacists a moment to rejoice over the modern equivalent of “the great white hope.” If you haven’t been following football Carolina Panther’s quarterback Cam Newton is unapologetically black but he has a braggadocio that makes many despise him. If you watch football you know that there are many black players out there filling the various positions of wide receivers, running backs, line backers, Center, etc. but like other black people are often shut out of the major decision making positions like head coach or in this case the quarterback. The quarterback position is largely dominated by white men so when a black QB emerges and excels he is at times viewed as a unicorn. You might say “but wait there’s Russell Wilson who’s black,” and you’d be right but for some reason white people aren’t as “disturbed by Russell as they are by Cam. You see Cam does not adhere to respectability politics and dabs on all his haters when he has the chance. Obviously since the Panthers lost the game people were quick to claim this was to humble Cam but some like Bill Romanowski just showed their racism by referring to Cam as a “boy.”

Racists have always viewed black arrogance as a threat whether it was back during slavery when those that rebelled when brutally punished or recently with Serena Williams who is always subjected to racist and sexist attacks. Why is it wrong that a young man is so passionate about what he does? The truth is like walking and breathing black people can’t celebrate or be dynamic if it in anyway makes white people uncomfortable. All I have to say that despite being a die-hard Giants fan, Cam is only 26 so he will definitely be back next year to dab on the hater.

You made some very valid points about the racist attitude of many NFL fans. Very on point post! I shared this on Twitter.
